Book Review - Maru by Bessie Head

Maru, South African Novel by Bessie Head

Maru is a novel by South African born, Botswana exiled writer, Bessie Head.
Head tackles the issues of oppression, class, love, spirituality and racism through the narrative of Margaret Cadmore. A Masarwa woman, raised by a missionary after the passing of her mother during birth.

Once done with her studies, Margaret is assigned to Dilepe as an assistant teacher and this is where her path crosses with that of Moleka and Maru.

Head takes you on a surreal journey of the eloquent and unusual ways of becoming that Margaret unassumingly embarks on.

It could be said, that Head achieves the impossible through Margaret. A young woman born an outcast and treated as a pariah throughout her life, finally reaffirming her dignity as a human being from the claws of unjust oppression through love.

Maru is a poignant book by one of Africa's most influential writers that puts the complexities of life into context.

"I am building a stairway to the stars. I have the authority to take the whole of mankind up there with me. That is why I write." - Bessie Head
