Interview with South African actor, Thapelo Mokoena

Last week, we linked up with the ever so handsome, Mr Thapelo Mokoena, getting up-close and very personal on his life, career, and future plans.

One of the many projects that Thapelo does is a movement called, Kasi Movie Nights. It definitely caught our eye because it deals with independent ideas and concepts. We love that he is so independently minded, as well as globally minded. We hope he inspires you as much as he's inspired us movie fanatics.

'Kasi Movie Nights, brought to you by Thapelo Mokoena, Mzansi Bioskop and GFC, is a mobile cinema that travels to rural and township communities exhibiting proudly South African produced films. It aims to reignite the culture of film in small societies; bringing back the “bioscope/drive-in” culture.'

RVL: When did the idea of Kasi Movie Nights come about?

Thapelo: This idea was birthed in 2012

RVL: Education or getting an education seems to be one of the things you firmly stand for - How important is it for the youth to reinvent themselves and find their niche in any kind of industry?

Thapelo: It's absolutely everything to me. I look at my life, it's a direct result of getting the education while I had the chance to. Most importantly taking it seriously enough to achieve the highest results possible. I always say, "nothing is as cool as being educated, it's the ultimate swag if you will"

RVL: You say this is your 15th time since your first screening for KMN? How has the response been?

Thapelo: The response has been great. The brand is growing at a healthy pace. There is more awareness every time we screen. The audiences and targeted markers are receiving the KMN brand very well.

RVL: What do you love about film?

Thapelo: Escapism

RVL: They say that movies are a representation of reality - based on your love for film, is your reality any similar to the 'movie world'?

Thapelo: My life is a movie to be quiet honest hahaha

RVL: You're an actor, producer, distributor, voice over artist, presenter, film maker and founder of KMN (Kasi Movie Nights), YPF (Young Producers Forum) and ESP (Easy Sundays Production) - how do you juggle all these roles and how do you balance that with personal life?

Thapelo: It's not easy at all. I am on my way to Cape Town and Durban as we speak.  I wear so many hats, at times it feels like I have to hibernate/shut down for a bit. With youth on my side I'll continue to chase dreams until the empire and the legacy is solidified.

RVL: Art is not just for entertainment, so beyond its entertainment value, what else does your work offer?

Thapelo: My work offers travel for me and my family. It offers cultural experiences, new friendships, new milestones, personal growth and overwhelming success. Travel is medicine. I am firmly a citizen of the world and not just a Sotho Africa/African.  I'm a Worldinanian LOL!

RVL: Your Twitter bio says that you're a god fearing man - How do you incorporate spirituality into your work?

Thapelo: GOD is my center and Guide. It would be weaker without God. The almighty provides a much needed sense of self and a strong will.

RVL: What was it like starring in a Romantic movie - Between Friends - and did you relate to your character?

Thapelo: It was different ti what I'm used to & fun. Light story about young relationships and love. Rom Com is an interesting genre. I'm just very careful not to become a rom com actor, there are other genres that could offer diversity as ab actor.

RVL: You're already internationally recognised. How else do you plan to make a mark on earth (better than you already have), are there any projects the youth should be looking out for?

Thapelo: I plan to travel to the UK next year to meet all my British fans for the 1st time since working on the no.1 family viewing drama series called WILD AT HEART for 8 years. I also plan in going t Cuba with my family. My son's second name us Cuba for a reason. I also am going to be in LA for a month next year on a mission to sell my work. Ultimately the next movie I'm working on is positioned to travel all the big film festivals around the world.

BIG UP for the platform and flying the flag for the arts.

SALUTE & RESPECT
