Another Mega Monday Feature and yet
again we managed to put together an awesome interview. We met up with Welile
Mabaso also known as Ms Welz via digital – a student who hails all the way from
the Free State and is one hell of a dresser. Here’s how it went:
Angela
Nimah:
Tell me a about yourself. Where are you from? What do you do? What are your general
professional and non-professional interests?
Ms Welz: I was born and
raised in a small town called Warden within the Free State and moved to
Ladysmith during my high school years. I’m studying in Bloemfontein.
I’d like to
start up my own clothing vintage line and perhaps be a model if possible. I
would like to venture into acting as well, and my main goal is to eventually
get a reality show. I’m currently involved in a community work project in
Bloemfontein where we actually go around giving homeless kids food and
blankets.
Angela Nimah:
What does style mean to you?
Ms
Welz: Style means the ability to be free through
fashion, being able to embrace your feelings through a piece of clothing and it
allowing you to feel confident about one’s inner and outer beauty. After all,
we want to look and feel good J
Angela Nimah:
Do you consider yourself an artist and why?
Ms Welz: Yes I do.
Because in every clothing that I wear I’m able to tell a story, not just with
the clothes but with my body language, depending on how randomly I mix single
items of clothing and how they turn out
to be in a ‘lipdropping’ outfit J
Angela Nimah: Tell us more about this organisation you’re part of.
Ms Welz: We actually
started this year – just my cousins, close friends and myself. My older sister
saves up money and we come through to help – this actually happens like twice a
year at the end of the semester.
Angela Nimah:
Are you currently working on any fashion related projects?
Ms Welz: Yes. Tshepo Selepe (my boyfriend and business partner) and I are working on our clothing line with our good friend,
Tladi as our designer; who is also a ‘Vinnie’ – a lover of vintage J
Angela Nimah:
What is the name of your clothing line?
Ms Welz: “Ap’grade”
Ms Welz: The
inspiration behind the name is to upgrade the level of vintage from where it is
now to a point where people can actually feel free to express and embrace the
beauty of forever existing African clothing and the undying love for fashion of
course.
Angela Nimah:
How would you describe your personal style – and how does vintage and African
clothing co-exist in this case?
Ms Welz: My personal
style is wearing anything vintage that is comfortable and making it look
exceptional. And you can make anything look proper and original with a bit of an
African touch here and there.
Angela Nimah:
Who is your favourite stylish person in the industry? It can be
local/international and why?
Ms Welz: Mome J
Mome keeps it real all the time, she never fakes her style or compromises it in
any circumstance, and for the fact that she has an awesome clothing line and
has done great for herself.
Angela Nimah:
How can people reach you for future growth, are you on Facebook, Twitter?
